Temporary on-street permit parking

Permit terms and conditions

This information is based on the provisions of Chapter 925 of the City of Toronto Municipal Code, Permit Parking. It is provided as a guide to assist applicants for temporary parking permits. If there is any discrepancy between this information and that Code chapter, the Code chapter shall govern.

  • Only residents of roads in a permit parking area and their guests are entitled to request a permit.
  • On-street parking permits are only issued for passenger motor vehicles, motorcycles and scooters. Permits may also be issued for vans, panel trucks, pick-up trucks or taxi cabs, where the vehicles are the primary means of family transportation for the permit holder, provided that the vehicle is 5.2m or less in length and has a registered gross weight of 3,000 kilograms or less.
  • Permits may also be issued for vans, panel trucks or pick-up trucks which are not the only means of family transportation for the permit holder where the vehicle is used solely for personal purposes by the permit holder, provided the commercial motor vehicle permit is stamped "Primarily Personal/Recreational Use" by the Ministry of Transportation at the time of application for on-street parking and the vehicle is 5.2m or less in length and has a registered gross weight of 3,000 kilograms or less.
  • On-street parking permits shall not be issued for campers, camper-trailers, recreational vehicles, motor homes, trailers, boats or other recreational vehicles mounted on trailers.
  • In order to be eligible for a permit, a vehicle must bear an up-to-date licence plate.

  • Whenever a motor vehicle is parked in accordance with a permit issued under the terms and conditions, the permit shall be clearly displayed in the windshield of the vehicle.
  • Weekly permits are valid for seven consecutive days from the start date and time and the permit shall expire at 12:00 midnight on the seventh day. 24 and 48 hour permits are valid for the time period indicated on the permit.
  • Despite having a permit for the road or permit parking area in question, no person shall park a motor vehicle continuously in any place for a period exceeding seven consecutive days.
  • Permits are non-refundable and non-transferable.
  • A vehicle with a valid permit properly displayed on a permit parking road is subject to all parking prohibitions, including temporary restrictions that may be imposed to facilitate snow removal operations, but shall be exempt from parking duration limits.
  • A permit may be revoked or cancelled when it is necessary to ensure public safety, when it was obtained through the submission of false, misleading or fraudulent information, or when the vehicle in respect of which the permit was issued has an expired validation sticker.
  • During the time periods indicated on signage in the permit parking area, no person shall park any vehicle in a location designated for permit parking, unless the person is the holder of a valid permit.
  • Parking is permitted under a permit only on the highways, on the side of the highway and locations within the highway and at the times identified on signage in the permit parking area.
  • Where parking meters or parking machines have been erected on a portion of a road in a permit parking area, the holder of a valid permit for that area shall not be required to deposit payment in the meter or parking machine, subject to the permit being properly displayed.
  • Where a valid permit is properly displayed on a vehicle on a road, the vehicle shall be permitted to display a 'for sale' sign.
