Recommendations
Councillor Paula Fletcher, seconded by Mayor Olivia Chow, recommends that:
1. City Council direct the General Manager, Toronto Water, in consultation with the General Manager, Parks and Recreation to update the wayfinding name of “Main Sewage Treatment Playground” located on the west side of Emdaabiimok Avenue from Lakeshore Boulevard. East to Eastern Avenue to “Ashbridge’s Bay Sports Hub” to better align with the operational use of the site, and to undertake any associated administrative and operational actions required to implement the name change.
Summary
Main Sewage Treatment Playground is an 11.2-hectare park at Eastern Avenue and Emdaabimok Avenue that features a range of sports amenities, including purpose-built, tournament sized pickleball courts, two basketball courts, a rugby field, a baseball diamond and a skatepark.
The Mayor and I have worked with Parks and Recreation staff, Toronto Water staff and local community groups to add these dedicated pickleball courts to ensure equitable and local access to this rapidly growing sport.
This well-used park is located on land owned by Toronto Water and serves as an important community space, especially in the summer months.
The new name should be reflective of the area and the great wide-range facilities available.
Given the proximity to Ashbridge’s Bay Wastewater Treatment Plant and Ashbridge’s Bay Park, I would like to request that City Council rename Main Sewage Treatment Playground to
Ashbridge’s Bay Sports Hub.
Reason for urgency:
The recent opening of the new pickleball courts has highlighted the fact that the current name is unfamiliar to most residents and creates confusion. Clarity is needed for planned events including tournaments.
