Community Council Decision
The Etobicoke York Community Council:
1. Requested the General Manager, Transportation Services, review intersections and pedestrian crossings within an 800m radius of 150 Eighth Street, with particular consideration for the locations identified in Attachment 1 to the letter (July 6, 2026) from Councillor Amber Morley, with the purpose of implementing Accessible Pedestrian Signals (APS), Tactile Walking Surface Indicators (TWSI), and any other improvements to support a safe and accessible pedestrian experience for the deaf-blind community.
Origin
Summary
The Canadian Helen Keller Centre’s (CHKC) affordable and supportive development project, designed to be accessible for the deaf-blind community, is progressing well and will soon reach the occupancy stage. Located at 150 Eighth Street, this 56-unit residential development will be home to a significant deaf-blind population. At occupancy, there will be a sudden localized increase in the demographic of people who need and rely on pedestrian accessibility and safety measures so that they can safely navigate their neighbourhood.
The purpose of this motion is to recognize that this local demographic change is imminent, and to initiate the necessary intersection improvements for pedestrians to welcome these new residents to New Toronto, prioritizing their safety and ability to integrate into the local area.
