Origin
Summary
This proposed motion is intended to address safety concerns for all road users, particularly children, families, and seniors who live, walk, and travel along East Haven Drive. East Haven Drive is a key access route for students attending Cliffside Public School, and residents have reported concerns about vehicle speeds and cut-through traffic on this corridor. The surrounding neighborhood is home to many school-aged children and vulnerable road users who rely on safe, comfortable conditions for walking, cycling, and accessing transit. Reducing the speed limit from 40 km/h to 30 km/h is consistent with the City’s Vision Zero road safety objectives and will help calm traffic, reduce the risk and severity of collisions, and create a safer environment for students and community members travelling to and from Cliffside Public School.
While Transportation staff doesn’t not typically recommend speed limit reductions without traffic calming measures in place. I am advancing this motion as a balanced approach to addressing safety concerns and the needs of the broader community. Going forward our office will continue to work with Transportation Services to consider additional measures, as warranted.
