The Etobicoke York Community Council:

1. Requested the Manager, Enforcement and Street Management, Transportation Services to:

a. Review the intersection of Royal York Road and Royal York Court for potential improvements, including traffic controls, and to report back to the Etobicoke York Community Council on the findings and recommendations.

b. Review Royal York Road in the vicinity of this intersection due to illegal or unsafe turning movements;

c. Undertake a review of the temporary lane closure to ensure it is functioning properly and determine whether further modifications are warranted; and

d. Examine potential mitigation measures to improve traffic movement in the area, including adjustments to the signal timing sequence at the signalized intersection immediately north and south on Royal York Road.

My office has received growing concerns from local residents who live on Royal York Court regarding the function and safety of this intersection. It is near this point that lanes converge and change to a dedicated turn lane. Due to increased traffic volumes along Royal York Road, residents are finding it very difficult to make both left- and right-hand turns onto Royal York Road, along with congestion and box-blocking of the intersection. Some pedestrians have been observed attempting to cross the street during busy times where sight lines are impeded due to queued traffic. The movement through this intersection is further complicated at times by stopped Toronto Transit Commission and school buses.

These concerns have been further exacerbated by temporary construction in the area and the temporary closure of the left-hand turn lane on Royal York Road leading to the private driveway into Humbertown Plaza. As a result, some motorists have been making dangerous U-turns or illegal left-hand turns onto Lambeth Road to avoid traffic delays. Someone recently resorted to moving the road pylons on their own to allow some of these turns.

Given the impact on traffic flow and safety, I am making the following request to the Community Council.
