The Toronto and East York Community Council:

1. Requested the General Manager, Transportation Services to provide a progress report on the Geary Avenue Mobility and Public Realm Strategy and any additional associated recommended measures to the Toronto and East York Community Council by the third quarter of 2024.

Residents in my ward have shared their concerns regarding road and pedestrian safety along Geary Avenue, which extends beyond Dufferin Street to the west and ends at Ossington Avenue to the east.

A growing number of new small businesses, restaurants, and cultural spaces have opened on Geary Avenue in the past several years – bringing more residents and their families to experience what Geary Avenue has to offer. I have heard numerous concerns about speeding cars, narrow sidewalks, and a lack of safety for pedestrians crossing between businesses. The need for action on safe mobility & public realm design is clear to ensure pedestrians and other vulnerable road users feel safe accessing the neighbourhood and many destinations along Geary Avenue.

In 2021, City Council adopted the Geary Avenue Mobility & Public Realm Strategy as part of the Geary Works Planning Study (2021.PH24.1). This strategy includes ten strategic directions for improving the street and streetscape on Geary Avenue. The Geary Avenue Mobility & Public Realm Progress Report will provide updates on the implementation of the strategy and specific actions & interventions based on the strategic directions.

Immediate and long-term road safety and Complete Streets solutions for a safer Geary Avenue will have myriad benefits for the local community, and those seeking to walk, cycle, and roll to enjoy this unique street. Therefore, I kindly request your support on the following recommendations.
