The Toronto and East York Community Council:

1. Requested Transportation Services to relocate the Toronto Transit Commission bus shelter on the southwest corner of Coxwell Avenue and Mortimer Avenue in order to provide more space for pedestrians and report back to the April 12, 2023 meeting of the Toronto and East York Community Council.

2. Requested Transportation Services to investigate the placement of a second crossing guard at Coxwell Avenue and Mortimer Avenue and report back to the April 12, 2023 meeting of the Toronto and East York Community Council.

The intersection of Coxwell and Mortimer is a busy hub in East York. RH McGregor Elementary School is located on the southwest corner, Michael Garron Hospital is located on the southeast corner, and the East York Civic Centre and Centennial Childcare centre is located on the northwest corner of the intersection. The nature of these various facilities means that this intersection is used by a high number of pedestrians and, in particular, children and other vulnerable road users. It is crucially important that this intersection be designed to ensure pedestrian safety.

In 2021, item TE30.42 was adopted at Toronto and East York Community Council requesting safety improvements at this intersection. The following recommendations build upon these requests to further improve safety.
