- ACTION
- Status:
- Amended
- Ward:
- 18 - Willowdale
City Council Decision
City Council on March 29, 30 and 31, 2023, adopted the following:
1. City Council communicate to the Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission for Ontario that Toronto City Council strongly objects to the plan to reduce the number of ridings in the City of Toronto as it will potentially reduce the representation of all Torontonians at all three levels of government, even though Toronto residents are already the most under-represented in Canada on a per capita basis.
2. City Council request the Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission for the Province of Ontario ("the Commission") to provide public notice regarding its recommended boundaries issued on February 10, 2023, or any other boundaries that it might subsequently recommend, and provide opportunities for public input in a manner similar to the process set out in Sections 19 (1-6) of the Electoral Boundaries Readjustment Act R.S.C., 1985, c.E-3 and that this recommendation be transmitted by the City Clerk to the Commission.
3. City Council request the Government of Canada review the issue of public participation in the review of riding boundaries and make recommendations to the Government of Canada with respect to amendments to the Electoral Boundaries Readjustment Act R.S.C., 1985, c.E-3 in order to provide opportunities for public input in response to proposals and recommendations prepared by Commissions, both after the initial Proposals are made and after the release of the Commissions’ Reports.

Community Council Recommendations
North York Community Council recommend that:
1. City Council strongly express its objection to the plan to change the Ward and Riding boundaries which could eventually reduce Toronto City Council by one seat.
Origin
Summary
Toronto is one of the fastest growing cities in North America and yet the recent iteration of the Federal Electoral Districts Redistribution removes one of our wards (Don Valley East), which will result in less representation for our constituents. As a Councillor for residents in North York, Ward 18, Willowdale, I strongly object to this plan that could eventually reduce Toronto City Council by one seat.
