Committee Decision
The Infrastructure and Environment Committee:
1. Requested the General Manager, Parks, Forestry and Recreation to report to the first Infrastructure and Environment Committee meeting of the 2022-2026 term of City Council on the fast-growing sport of pickleball including:
a. the distribution of current pickleball facilities across the city by Ward, and opportunities to add more;
b. an assessment of demand for pickleball; and
c. a review of the current scheduling of pickleball with a view of expanding the hours of play offered at City-run recreation centres.
Origin
Summary
Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in North America and Ward 14 Toronto Danforth is no exception. It is a game for all ages but is especially popular among seniors because it affords a great opportunity for exercise as well as the health benefits derived from remaining active.
The number of facilities currently available do not come close to serving the demand and the
number of players.
Altering outdoor tennis courts and ice rinks to accommodate pickleball is a relatively
inexpensive and quick task and would allow for both indoor and outdoor play year round.
Doing so would provide a great, inexpensive and accessible recreational opportunity for many
residents and I would like to explore the opportunities to expand the sport in my ward.
