The Toronto and East York Community Council:

1. Reduced the speed limit from 50 kilometres per hour to 40 kilometres per hour on Rosedale Valley Road, between Severn Street and Bayview Avenue.

2. Reduced the speed limit from 50 kilometres per hour to 40 kilometres per hour on Aylmer Avenue, between Yonge Street and Severn Street.

Residents on either side of Rosedale Valley Road have shared concerns about the number of speeding vehicles along this stretch. Due to the road classification system, we are unable to install speed humps along this road, but my office will work with staff to explore and learn how to amend the existing classification in the months ahead to support an even safer configuration on Rosedale Valley Road and the surrounding area.

While working on this, we can take a step that has been shown through countless studies to have saved lives without the presence of enforcement and reduce serious injury, by lowering the speed limit on Aylmer Avenue and Rosedale Valley Road from 50km/h to 40km/h.

There will undoubtedly still be those who choose to put their lives and that of others in danger by speeding, but this reduction is integral to controlling the top speed of all other road users and protecting the most vulnerable adjacent to and on our roads.

I welcome the future addition of automated speed and noise enforcement along this stretch to protect the ongoing health and safety of all road users and adjacent neighbours.
