The North York Community Council:
1. Directed the Manager, Traffic Operations, Transportation Services to conduct a review of the traffic safety and operations standards at the intersection of Keele Street and Calvington Drive, including but not limited to assessing streetlight coverage, traffic and pedestrian lights timing and synchronization, traffic control signage visibility and efficacy, and the feasibility of installing advanced green turning lights, and to report the findings by the third quarter of 2020.
Origin
Summary
The purpose of this motion is to request an urgent review of the safety and operation standards currently present at the Keele Street and Calvington Drive intersection.
York Centre continues to mourn the outcome of a tragic crash at the corner of Keele Street and Calvington Drive. Early Sunday June 7th, a teenager lost her life while her sister sustained injuries when a vehicle turning left bound into Calvington Dr., failed to yield to the crossing pedestrians. The driver remains in police custody while investigations continue to determine the cause of the collision.
We take traffic safety concerns very seriously and we continue to strive to improve our roads and neighbourhoods to become as safe as possible. Regardless of the preliminary causes leading to the aforementioned tragic incident we believe Transportation Services staff should conduct a complete review of the intersection and improve its safety if possible. This review could include assessing street lighting, adjusting traffic light timing and synchronization, repairing and updating traffic signs and studying the feasibility of installing advance green traffic lights.
