Summary

Alton Avenue is a one-way northbound street which runs north-south adjacent to Greenwood Park. As such, Alton Avenue is used heavily year round by pedestrians accessing the park, renovated skating rink or outdoor pool. Where Alton Avenue intersects with Queen Street East, Dundas Street East and Gerrard Street East, there are pedestrian crosswalks which allow people to cross these major intersecting roads safely. There are no crosswalks or traffic control signals which cross Alton Avenue from the east side to the west side.

Due to the fact that Alton Avenue is adjacent to Greenwood Park, pedestrians are crossing at unmarked, uncontrolled locations on a daily basis putting their safety at risk. This is exacerbated by the fact that there are no stop signs, stop bars or corner curb cuts where Alton Avenue intersects with Stanton Avenue or Sawden Avenue.

This motion includes recommendations to protect pedestrians, improve road safety and ensure that residents have safe access to our recreation facilities.
