Appointees' Biographies:

Andrea Geddes Poole

A life-long and enthusiastic patron of libraries and archives, Andrea Geddes Poole is a retired historian and the author of a number of scholarly works on the connection between philanthropy and citizenship. She practiced law in New York City for a number of years before returning to Canada to work in Toronto's cultural and not-for-profit sector. Andrea serves on the board of the Hardy Geddes Foundation and is a former member of Ontario's Consent and Capacity Board.

Sue Graham-Nutter

Sue Graham-Nutter was elected Chair of the Toronto Public Library Board on January 29, 2018, having joined the Board in February 2015. Sue’s interest in the library stems from the support the Morningside Library provided her during her school years. While a student at the University of Toronto, Sue played a key role, through the Students Council, of realizing the dream of building the Vincent Bladen Library. Sue is the Chief Executive Officer of the Rekai Centres which own and operate two long-term care homes in downtown Toronto. She has extensive professional experience gained over 25 years in the public and private sectors, with a particular focus on public affairs, marketing and real estate. Sue is a recent graduate from Harvard University’s Graduate Certificate in Real Estate Financing in addition to having an Hons BA in Public Administration from the University of Toronto and a diploma in Fundraising from Humber College. In addition to her role as Chair of the Toronto Public Library Board, Sue is a member of the Business Board at the University of Toronto and previously chaired the Campus Affairs Committee at the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus.

Jonathan Hoss

Jonathan Hoss is an executive with a background in the arts, technology, and education. Over nine years at McKinsey & Company, he consulted on strategy, learning and development, and digital ventures. He is now Vice-President and Head of Innovation at Great-West Life, and volunteers as an advisor to startups, non-profits, and arts organizations. He holds degrees in Engineering Science from the University of Toronto and Strategic Foresight and Innovation from OCAD University.

Fenton Jagdeo

Fenton Jagdeo is problem solver and an community advocate. He currently works for Deloitte's global management consulting practice with a focus on strategy and innovation, helping billion dollar organizations overcome their challenges. Prior to that he managed strategy for a large Canadian restaurant chain, working closely with the CEO on initiatives. In his spare time, Fenton enjoy staying active, and collecting novel socks. He holds an HBA from Ivey Business School at Western University.

Jennifer Liu

Jennifer is an Associate Partner at E&Y’s Financial Services practice and an avid reader. She has over 18 years of experience in innovation, business transformation, global expansion, operational efficiency improvement, merger integration, strategic planning, market and client strategies. Jennifer believes the Library plays a crucial role in our city, promoting literacy, diversity, and community building. By serving on the board, she hopes to support the Library’s journey into the new age.

Strahan McCarten

Strahan McCarten was elected Vice Chair of the Toronto Public Library Board on January 29, 2018, having joined the Board in February 2015. He is a member of Toronto Public Library’s Innovation Council, an advisory group of recognized leading individuals from the academic, creative and technology communities. Mr. McCarten has over 15 years of experience in IT and strategy consulting. He is currently Senior Vice President of Product and Strategy, for eStruxture Data Centers, and previously worked at Scalar Decisions, a national IT integrator; Bell Canada and Mercer Consulting, a global strategy consulting firm. Strahan is a recognized cloud and cyber security expert who frequently writes and speaks on trends in the industry. He has a BBA from Wilfrid Laurier University and an MBA from the Rotman School of Management.

Alim Remtulla

Alim Remtulla is a marketing and strategy professional that has led initiatives across the public, private and non-profit sectors. Alim was born and raised in Toronto, and is interested in advancing the arts in the city. Alim is also on the board of directors for the Revue Film Society and the Theatre Centre.

The Civic Appointments Committee recommends that:

1. City Council appoint the following candidates to the Toronto Public Library Board, at pleasure of Council, for a term of office ending on November 14, 2022, and until successors are appointed:

2. City Council direct that the Confidential Attachments 1, 2, and 3 to the report (January 14, 2019) remain confidential in their entirety as they relate to personal matters about identifiable individuals being considered for appointment to the Toronto Public Library Board.

Geoff Malyk

Geoff Malyk is an Assistant Vice President in the Capital Projects & Infrastructure group at PwC where he advises public and private sector clients on the financial and transaction structuring of public-private partnerships.  He previously worked at Infrastructure Ontario on innovative infrastructure and real estate transactions and also served as the Economic Policy Advisor to Canada’s Minister of Finance.  Mr. Malyk holds a BA, MBA, and law degree from York University.

Alim Remtulla

The Civic Appointments Committee will conduct interviews and recommend eight candidates to City Council for appointment to the Toronto Public Library Board.
