Scarborough Community Council:

1. Requested the Director, Transportation Services, Scarborough District to consult with the Principal of Poplar Road Jr. Public School and to report back to the June 6, 2018 meeting of the Scarborough Community Council on the installation of a Signalized Pedestrian Crossover (PXO) on Dearham Wood.

With an increasing number of tragic traffic incidences occurring at our local community schools an urgent need to implement measures is required. Located on Dearham Wood in southeast Scarborough, Poplar Road Jr. Public School is experiencing high volumes of traffic and is in need of a Signalized Pedestrian Crossover (PXO).

An increasing number of seniors, students and young children with their caregivers cross Dearham Wood to attend Poplar Road Jr. Public School and Dearham Wood Daycare.  The painted lines currently painted on the road are not serving as a deterrent for motorist, leaving residents at a disadvantage in a safety situation as they cross the road.  A Signalized Pedestrian Crossover would provide a clear notification to vehicles to stop to allow pedestrians to cross.

Dearham Wood Daycare offers nursery school programs for young children throughout the day with residents crossing the road during at all times.  A Signalized Pedestrian Crossover (PXO) would be beneficial at this crossing as it would be utilized as required providing residents a safe passage to attend Poplar Road Jr. Public School and Dearham Wood Day Care both located at 66 Dearham Wood.

Recommendation:

1. Scarborough Community Council request Transportation Services to report back to the June 6, 2018 Scarborough Community Council Meeting for the installation of a Signalized Pedestrian Crossover (PXO) on Dearham Wood.

            a) Transportation Staff consult with the Principal of Poplar Road Jr. Public School.
