Summary
I am writing to you to ask for your committee to consider my request for a Pilot Bike Share program in South East Scarborough.
The City of Toronto currently has 270 Bike Share stations centered largely within the downtown core, not going further east than Victoria Park. The Bike Share program has been an incredible success since its inception in 2011, increasing its ridership every year. In 2017 alone over 1.5 million rides were taken in the city and has 9,500 active riders.
The Bike Share program is unobtainable for the majority of Scarborough residents.
The creation of a pilot Bike Share program in southeastern Scarborough would benefit the City of Toronto through:
- Reduction of green-house emissions and traffic congestion through the promotion of biking as another form of transportation.
- Promote exercise and healthy living through more accessible Bike Share stations.
- Generate revenue for the City.
- Show public interest for the expansion of such a program.
