Community Council Decision

The Toronto and East York Community Council:

1.  Requested the General Manager, Transportation Services, to report to the Toronto and East York Community Council in the second quarter of 2018 on options to improve pedestrian safety in residential neighbourhoods, including paved speed limit markings and additional zebra crossings.

Summary

Keeping residents safe on our streets is a serious concern of all of us. I am writing to request your consideration of the accompanying recommendation to ask Transportation Services to report on measures we can take to improve pedestrian safety.

Visual cues, beyond street signs, are used in cities all over the world to reinforce the message that drivers must slow down on residential streets. Municipalities in cold weather regions, including Rekjavik, Iceland, the Swiss Alps, and New York City, have implemented paved speed limit markings. Toronto has a few zebra crossings but should look at adding more to alert drivers that pedestrians are expected at intersections.

This motion requests the General Manager, Transportation Services, to report on the items noted above and additional measures to improve traffic safety.

Thank you for your consideration.
