Notice of Proposal to Amend the City of Toronto Municipal Code: Chapter 694, Signs, General (the "Sign By-law")

 

Notice is given that the Chief Building Official and Executive Director, Toronto Building, is reporting on a proposed amendment to Municipal Code Chapter 694, Signs, General (the "Sign By-law"), to modify the provisions concerning the processing of applications for amendments to, and variances from the provisions the Sign By-law, and delegate authority to the Chief Building Official and Executive Director, Toronto Building to implement amendments to sign district designations contained in Schedule A, Maps, and related matters.

 

The proposed amendment seeks to:

  1. Authorize the Chief Building Official to directly submit Bills to City Council for updating the maps in Schedule ‘A’ of the Sign By-law (Sign District Maps) where the Official Plan designation of properties has been modified by Council.
  2. Subject to the criteria in the Sign By-law, authorize the Chief Building Official to determine the streaming of Sign Variance and Sign By-law Amendment Applications.
  3. Authorize the Chief Building Official to refuse applications for proposals for variances or amendments to provisions of the Sign By-law that would contravene provisions of City of Toronto Policies or other City By-laws.
  4. Delete criterion 694-30A(2), which regulates permitted Third Party Sign Types, from the criteria required to be satisfied for Sign Variances.

The Chief Building Official and Executive Director, Toronto Building, is recommending that the Council of the City of Toronto approve the amendments to the Sign By-law described above.

 

The Planning and Housing Committee may recommend that the Council of the City of Toronto amend the Sign By-law to approve the amendments to the Sign By-law described above.

 

At its meeting to be held in via video conference and in person at City Hall, 100 Queen Street West, on February 28, 2024 commencing at 9:30 a.m., or as soon as possible thereafter, the Planning and Housing Committee of Toronto City Council will hear in person or by his or her counsel, agent or solicitor, any person who wishes to speak to the matter.

The Planning and Housing Committee will make its final recommendations on February 28, 2024 which will be forwarded to City Council for its meeting on March 20, 21 and 22, 2024.
